Home Giza Abu Simbel Kom Ombo Edfu Karnak Luxor Valley of the Kings Cairo Saqqara

Aug. 9 – We arrived late in the afternoon at Luxor and went straight to Karnak Temple. It is the largest religious edifice in the world. The Temple of Karnak is actually three main temples, smaller enclosed temples, and several outer temples. This vast complex was built and enlarged over a 1300 period. Karnak was the spiritual and cultural center of the Egypt of the Pharaohs, dedicated to Amun-Ra, the King of the Gods. The highlights here include the largest surviving obelisk (The Obelisk of Thutmose I) in Egypt, three temples for the Theban trinity of Gods, and the amazing Great Hypostyle Hall, with 134 columns 23 meters high.
